Computers
In order to be a truly creative computer person, whether it be a programmer or a designer or a theoretician, you need to have a strong left-brain component and a strong right-brain component, and you need to be able to integrate the two of them. There are many people who are wonderful left-brained folks. There are people who are tremendously undisciplined right-brained folks. What is needed is the discipline to coordinate the two. If you don't have that coordination and that discipline, you're always going to be either building beautiful elegant little things that might work, or you're going to be building huge systems that don't work.
