Knowledge
Knowledge gained through experience of plants and animals is not an inferior substitute for proper scientific knowledge; it is the real thing. Direct experience is the only way to build up an understanding that is not only intellectual but intuitive and practical, involving the senses and the heart as well as the rational mind. Scientific investigations can illuminate and enrich this direct practical knowledge, but they are no substitute for it; indeed, they depend on it themselves.
