Everglades Trip - February 2000

Day 3 - Wednesday, February 2

Our First Portage

The guide said "extensive mud flats make this site difficult for power boaters." What about canoeists?! We awoke to find our shoreline had moved a hundred yards out to sea. Fortunately, the flats were firm so we could portage.

Lostman's River

This was our most difficult day. The wind was blowing a steady 10 MPH from the north east. We had to fight it whenever we were on open water.

On our way up the Lostman's River we saw over 100 American White Pelicans on a mud flat. Apparently they always come back to this particular area.

Plate Creek

We soon discovered that a tail wind could be more difficult than a head wind. Both canoes had a hard time maintaining a heading with the wind pushing use around from behind. Can you say "J stroke?" We ended up with both bow and stern paddling on the same site to ease the steering problems.

Life on a Chickee

We suspect that Plate Creek is one of the better chickees in the park. It has been there for a long time and was used for trading in the early days. It larger than the others we saw and is limited to a single party. The water here was fairly fresh and suitable for bathing. I slept out under the stars this night. A breeze kept the bugs at bay.

Dinner that night was Pad Thai with basal noodles and tempeh.
