Road Trip West 9, Green River Utah
Critters Galleries History Road_Trip_2026 Rock_Art Travel 2026
We decided to get a room in Green River Utah for two nights so we could: visit nearby Dinosaur Track and Rock Art sites that day, return to have a real cooked dinner, head out early the next day for Arches, then on to Nine Mile Canyon the next day.

Picket Wire Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite
Critters History Travel Video 2019
On my trip west this year I made sure I had time to visit this unique area. The Dinosaur Tracks are located within and along side the Purgatoire River within the COmanche National Grassland. It is located 35 miles south of La Junta, CO off the lightly maintained County Road 25 (upper left in the map above). The last few miles are on a primitive forest service road that ends at the Withers Canyon Trailhead and Campground (four sites with fire grates and a pit toilet).

Santa Fe River Day Trip
Critters Galleries Nature Travel 2016
I was itching to go kayaking somewhere new, so I headed over to the Santa Fe River. There was a little park and boat launch near the highway 47 bridge. While getting ready to go I spotted what looked like green leaves stuck on the sides of two trees. They turned out to be Luna Moths, which I think were newly emerged. Beautiful!

Florida Manatees
Birds Critters Galleries Nature Video 2024
A recent cold snap in the Tampa Bay area forced hundreds of manatees inland in search of warmer water. One ready source is the outflow from the TECO powerplant. To their credit, the company provides a dedicated viewing dock and surrounding wildlife preserve for birds and other critters.

Horseshoe Crabs
Critters Galleries Medicine Nature Science 2026
Horseshoe Crabs (Limulus polyphemus) evolved some 450 million years ago.[1] They have no close relatives in the world today. They are true living fossils and generally fascinating. First, they are not crabs—but remotely related to spiders. They have nine eyes, two underneath near the legs. They have twelve legs, including specializations for pushing, feeding, and mating (males). They breathe and excrete using book gills just behind their legs. And here's the best part—they chew with their knees!

BWCA Canoing & Hiking 2023
Birds Bwca Camping Travel Video 2023
This year's trip was a return to a familiar locale. Our goal was to establish a basecamp and take day trips from there. We started at Bearskin Lake and paddled across to the Duncan Lake portage. After exploring options on the north shore of Duncan we decided to stay on the campsite closest to the portage on the south shore (conveniently vacated by the prior group as we waited).

Red Eft Newts
Critters Nature 2023
I was recently walking through a dense hemlock forest in upstate New York where I came across some chewed-up mushrooms and several little orange critters crawling around them. I instantly thought a) salamanders? and b) they must be eating the mushrooms. Turns out I was right on the first point and only half-right on the second.

Song of the Broad-Winged Tree Cricket
Audio Critters Nature 2016
One of the most relaxing sounds I’ve ever heard occurs late at night in the spring and summer, usually after the frogs settle down. After wondering about it for twenty years I finally know who’s singing… Broad-Winged Tree Crickets (Oecanthus latipennis)!
