Day 2 - Okefenokee Canoe Trip - March 2004 |

It rained during the night and the morning was cold, gray, and windy. After breaking camp we made our way through several large open areas for about an hour. The waterway slowly evolved into a bona fide stream with flowing water. This was very different from the day before. The flora also changed and we left the gold club and pitcher plants behind. |

The stream and trees grew in size as we preceded south. The water was definitely flowing with us. Around noon we happened upon a shelter with an actual table! So we were able to have a leisurely lunch and stretch our legs a bit. |

The sun came out as we returned to the canoes. In another mile or two the stream widened into an area called Big Water. This is a beautiful area with many large trees. We reached the camping platform by about 3pm after paddling about 11 miles. It is located a short distance up the trial to Floyd's Island. After the tents were up a few of us continued east up the trail into a large wet prairie. Later that evening we took turns spotting gators and spiders with our flashlights. We also had a chance to star gaze. Jupiter's moons and the Andromeda Galaxy were most notable. Next... |
