Day 1 
Highland Beach to Harney River Chickee (8 Miles)We were brought approximately 25 miles down the coast by "Captain Dave" in a 24-foot skiff. This boat accommodated our 17-foot canoe without any problem. By the time we reached our destination, the tide was receding and so he put us down just south of the Highland Beach camp site. We quickly loaded up the canoe and set off through 1-2 foot seas with a following wind.

| On our way we passed the mouth of the Broad River. We also passed five smaller creeks (which drain the Nightmare) until we found the northern fork of the Harney River. The tide was still receding, so we paddled into a one-and one-half mile per hour current. We arrived at the Harney River Chickee at approximately 3:30 p.m. This was by far the smallest camp site we stayed at, approximately 10x12 feet. Dinner was vegetable stir-fry with tempeh. |
