Mark Trail's Cooking Tips
Ed Dodd 1971 (Camping)

This little book brings back memories of reading the Sunday newspaper when I was a teen. There would always be a non-humorous cartoon by and about the fictional Mark Trail
promoting life outdoors. These cartoons often depicted humans and wild animals in close proximity. This book of camp cooking tips borders on the whimsical.

I have no idea if the above is a good idea. This is the first I've heard of it. Ashes are also a source of lye for making soap. So… ??

Note the camper up in the tree due to the mama Grizzly Bear and her cub.

The idea of freezing milk, water, or other food in advance is still a good one. Not sure modern milk cartons are just wax and paper. They may have plastic in them that would not be good to burn.
Not sure why the man with the ax appears angry but he's about to lose a finger! 😉
Also note the ax itself. This is an accurate depiction of a lightweight Hudson Bay Ax preferred by canoeists and other campers.

I would be careful with the above trick. This is the first I've heard of it.

This would be a good idea on a car or canoe trip. But hiking?! No wonder the hikers need to hold on to the rocks to support the extra weight. 🙁

Note that the evaporating cooler
would only work if the relative humidity is low!

I remember my Mother had clean potato nails
in the drawer with other cooking gear. She used them in the regular indoor oven.

The choice of turtle species is probably not the best. To my knowledge soft-shelled turtles are preferred for making soup.
