Broad River to Rogers River Bay Chickee (11 Miles)
The morning was clear and cool. We had an interesting and welcomed
dilemma - there were at least four possible routes to our next destination
in Rogers River Bay. The wilderness waterway continued up
the Broad River and through a series to bays to the east
before turning north there was a very small creek called "The
Cutoff" that connected the Upper Broad River to Rogers River.
We elected to go down the Broad into the gulf and then into the
mouth of Rogers River.

This turned out to be an excellent plan as the tides,
currents, and wind were in our favor almost the entire day. By noon,
we had reached The Cutoff and followed it for 100 yards or
so and tied up in the shade for lunch. Current was moving past us
from Rogers River into the Broad River. The channel appeared to be
very navigable at mid-tide. |

After lunch, we were surprised to find that the river
was now flowing backwards and we proceeded to wind our way towards
Rogers River Bay. This was the most pleasant afternoon of the
entire trip. One we reached the bay, we more or less stumbled on the
chickee, which located at a different location than indicated on our
map. Dinner was tri-colored pasta with pesto and pine nuts. There
was a steady breeze that evening which kept the insects to a minimum.
I successfully slept out under the stars while Al retreated to the
tent. |
