Everglades Canoe Trip 2007

One Last Challenge

photophoto The day dawned clear and calm. We were up early and on the water before nine. To begin with we had the wind at our backs, and it was raging by the time we got to Hell's Bay. We saw a flock of White Pelicans fishing along the way. This is the first time I've seen this behavior. They gather together and "herd" fish into the shallows where they scoop them up. Unfortunately we had one more bay to cross against the wind. Again the canoe with a keel performed much better. But we all made it through in good time.

Back into the Mangroves

photo photo The day grew warm and we were well protected from the wind as we wound our way along the mangrove trail. It was not nearly as long and boring as I thought it would be. There were Ospreys and other wildlife along the way. The markers slowly counted down to zero and we were back at the dock a little after noon, the successful conclusion of a very challenging trip!
