Little Lake Journal
Boats Nature Photography 2026

An occasional journal of photographs and activities on the Lake thru the seasons. I walk or kayak almost every day and these are the flora and fauna I encounter. The photographs are mine unless otherwise noted. Entries are in reverse chronological order.
Philadelphia Gallery

I had the pleasure of visiting Philadelphia multiple times during my career in support of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). In 2006 I even lived there for five months during a sabbatical. The gallery below contains a number of architectural/urban environment studies, and my earliest attempts at High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. I took most of the sculpture and fine art photos at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and long walks along the Schuylkill River.
Taliesin (Frank Lloyd Wright)
Galleries History Photography Travel 2023

Taliesin was the home and architectural school of Frank Lloyd Wright. It is located near Spring Green in southwest Wisconsin. The area was originally settled by his grandfather and Wright returned to the area in 1911 with his then mistress, Mamah Borthwick. The family and buildings suffered many disasters over the years—including two fires, a mudslide, and the murder of Borthwick and six others. The current site is referred to as Taliesin III and is a canonical example of The Prairie School of architecture.
Badlands National Park

My brother-in-law Rick flew out from Colorado so we could go on a road trip together across South Dakota and beyond. We entered the Park via the Northeast Entrance (extreme right on map) and spent most of our day slowly moving west, stopping frequently—sometimes to take photos, sometimes due to bison migrating across the road. We ended up at the Sage Creek primitive camping area (upper left).
BWCA Canoe Trip 2024
Birds Bwca Galleries Photography Travel 2024

This year we decided to base our trip out of Ely. We spent the night in the bunkhouse on Snowbank Lake. The next day we took the short drive to the official entry point #27 to head out into the wilderness.

Wet-Boot Adventure in Paria Canyon AZ
Camping Galleries Photography Southwest_2024 Travel 2024

The Paria River begins up by Bryce Canyon and flows south through Grand Staircase Escalante and the Vermilion Cliffs Arizona. Just before it empties into the Colorado River it flows thru a deep slot canyon and this is where we hiked.
Panhandle Pitcher Plant Expedition
Galleries Nature Photography Plants Travel 2020

The last time I went hunting for Pitcher Plants was 2017. This year I went about two weeks earlier and learned more about their distribution and lifecycles. I visited six sites in all, moving from Florida into Alabama. I saw mostly pitcher plant flowers as I moved west, apparently the flowers emerge days to weeks before the funnel-shaped leaves.
Everglades Kayak Trip 2025
Everglades Galleries Photography Travel Video 2025

Just back from my 29th (!) wilderness trip in the Everglades! This year I went with my younger brother who is a veteran of a similar canoe trip in 2009. We made a tour of the four single chickees in the southern part of the park with an option to boomerang out to the Gulf of Mexico on the tides. The trip pretty much came off without a hitch. Only downside was the nightime temps were in the upper 60s with little or no wind… so we had bugs!
BWCA Canoe Trip 2025
Birds Bwca Galleries History Photography Travel 2025

This year we decided to visit the big lakes at the end of the Gunflint Trail. We planned to spend the first night in the bunkhouse on Seagull Lake. It was nice weather when we arrived, but the forecast called for thunderstorms, lots of wind, and near freezing temps. We elected to stay at the Trail's End campground and do day trips instead of heading out onto the big Lake Saganaga.
Aurora Borealis in Northern Minnesota
Galleries Nature Photography Science 2025

I was visiting friends in northern Minnesota and had just finished a good meal. We were all fading fast so I said good night and headed for my hammock. As my eyes adjusted to the dark I noticed that the sky looked kind of strange—like city glow from a nearby town. Then, on the edge of the glow, I saw the tell-tale green curtains of the Northern Lights!
The Wave & Coyote Buttes North
Galleries Photography Southwest_2024 Travel Video 2024

The entrance to The Wave is a long curved corridor of twisted stone stripes with no real floor. The stripes vary in both color and indentation. It’s a remarkable visual/tactile surface! The actual Wave is tulip-shaped, looking a bit like a skateboard park designed by Dr. Seuss. There was an ephemeral pool at the lowest point.
Everglades Kayak Trip 2024
Everglades Galleries Photography Travel Video 2024

This year we planned an aggressive trip—going down the Gulf Coast to access the narrow Wood River, revisit Camp Lonesome, stay at Willy Willy, and then loop back through the various inland bays on our return. Yet again we were thwarted by adverse winds.
Gulf Coast Carnivorous Plants
Galleries Nature Photography Plants Travel 2025

Spring is the time to hunt for carnivorous plants along the Gulf Coast of Florida and Alabama. The image below from 2020 shows three different, unrelated species that have all evolved the ability to trap and consume insects (Pitcher Plants, Butterworts, and Sundews).
Dave's Iris

My neighbor Dave transplanted these roadside Iris plants to our local drainage ditch. The seeds must be spreading down stream with new plants and flowers popping up at each culvert. 🙂
Cellon Oak (Florida Champion Tree)
Hdr Nature Photography Plants 2012

The Cellon Oak Park is located three miles south of La Crosse off highway 121 in rural Alachua County. For years I’ve driven the highways nearby and never knew this gem was there. The tree is magnificent in person. Well worth a trip!
Arches National Park

Arches was the next stop on our way to Vermilion Cliffs. Peter had never been there and I hadn't been since college. We found a nice walk-in site in the Devils Garden Campground and took our first hike from there to the Broken Arch.
In Pursuit of Pitcher Plants 2017
Nature Photography Plants Travel 2017

We decided to take a week-end trip to the Panhandle to see if we could find Pitcher Plants. We were not disappointed! Here I am standing along Highway 65 in the Apalachicola National Forest…
Fisher Towers
Galleries Photography Southwest_2024 Travel 2024

Our first stop in Utah was Fisher Towers along the back road to Moab. I had been here before on my trips to Canyonlands. These stark, vertical towers are popular with climbers and there is a small primitive campground on site. We spent the better part of our day hiking the main in-and-out trail. It did not disappoint! We decided to camp there in the late afternoon. There was frost everywhere when we got up the next day. From there we moved on to Arches National Park and Vermilion Cliffs!
Hagia Sophia, Istanbul Turkey
Art Galleries History Photography Travel Turkey_2016 2016

Hagia Sophia is one of the most historic buildings in the world! It is a strange palimpsest of Islam superimposed on top of Orthodox Christianity. Finished around 537 CE in Constantinople (now Istanbul), it was the largest building in the world for a thousand years. When we visited it was a secular museum and world heritage site. In 2020 a theocratic government turned it back into a functioning mosque. I do not know if the Christian art and iconography has been covered or possibly removed since then.
Birds of Amelia Island
Birds Galleries Nature Photography Travel 2015

I was the trailing spouse for a meeting on Amelia Island. I spent most of a morning taking these photos of the local birds—including some spectacular flying by a pair of Ospreys! Right at the limit of my equipment.

This is a slide!
